Jolly’s time at Ella’s

To mark International Women’s Day, we asked Jolly, our wonderful intern from Paris, to reflect on her time with us so far. She told us that Ella’s is the most impactful charity she’s seen, and would love to see something similar set up in France. These are her thoughts on her five months at Ella’s.

‘I always wanted to work in a charity that works with human trafficking, and I searched for charities in France first but found none that I related to. One day last summer, I saw an Instagram post from Halimot in Smiley News which led me to looking into Ella’s. I sent off an open application and within 48 hours, I had a reply, and that was it!

During my time as an intern at Ella’s, I have learned so much; not just about the work but about the people behind it. I have witnessed first-hand the incredible dedication, compassion and resilience of the team.’

A warm welcome

‘One of the things that I found the most interesting so far is helping when a new woman moves into one of our safe houses. I particularly remember the intake I did together with support worker, Maya. We prepared the room and welcomed the new woman. She was very open and felt safe enough to tell me her story so we instantly connected. The warm welcome from Ella’s, makes the women feel safe and have hope for their futures.’

Two women being creative
I have seen the light in the eyes of two of the women I welcomed, the quiet relief in a safe space, the renewed sense of possibility. The work done here is life-changing, and I feel privileged to have been a witness to it.

Small charity, big impact

‘At the annual Christmas party, I helped collect the gifts donated by Balham Baptist Church. Seeing the children receive the gifts and create memories with their mums, warmed my heart. I also assisted one of the women with basic computer skills since we both speak French. The tasks I have helped with so far are very small, but I know that they have made a big difference to their lives.’

‘My experience at Ella’s has been great, and the entire Ella’s team has been very welcoming. What struck me most is how deeply they care for each individual, recognising each woman’s unique story and needs. It is truly about rebuilding lives one step at a time.

They don’t just provide shelter or support: I believe they offer hope, dignity and security to the women they help.

To my colleagues at Ella’s: you are givers of hope, builders of futures and a true inspiration. And perhaps, one day, somewhere else, this inspiration will open new doors…’.
